Paulo Thiago By Guilherme Cruz

At UFC 109, Paulo Thiago put Mike Swick to sleep on a tight hand triangle choke and eyes more challenges in the top ranked welterweight division. Back to Brazil, the fighter talked to TATAME.com about the victory, the submission of the night bonus, who must be his next opponent and a lot more.

What did you think about the fight?

Awesome, everything went fine. What we thought that would happen on the fight happen.

What did you expect for this fight?

We knew he’s aggressive, so we trained a lot to catch him coming. And it worked. He hit me one, I gave two steps back and he thought I had felt the punch and came, but I hit him twice and he fell on triangle position, so it was easier.

Did you feel his punch?

Not much. I lost the balance a little, but the view didn’t get black.

He didn’t hit on the triangle and slept...

I don’t know, I think the position fell very strong, I don’t know if he felt the punches... It was less than five seconds.

What did United States guys thought about your victory?

Everybody liked. UFC guys said I’m starting to shine, but I have to continue.

And you won the extra bonus for the submission...

It saved me (laugh).

What’s the next step now?

My category is big. I don’t know if I have to wait any fight. The category is full, I have no idea.

Do you think about the belt?

I’m not worry about it yet. On the right time UFC will give me the chance. I’m getting experience, feeling more comfortable. I’m not ready yet.

What is need to beat St. Pierre?

St. Pierre is very smart, it’s going to be a chess game. Who gets calmer to annul the game of the other, takes it. He works a lot the takedown defense, the ground, the guard... You have to exchange with him, be aggressive. There are a lot of ways to study.

How much did the trains with the guys from Nova União and Anderson Silva helped you to get better to this fight?

Theses trains are very good, a lot of good guys on this gyms, fighting all over the world, but I can’t forget about my team here in Brasilia. It’s everything, helped a lot. A lot was made in Brasilia and I can’t recognize only one part of it.
